Confluence mixes angular, math-y arrangements with catchy melodies and subtle grooves to attain a sound that is both emotionally engaging and musically deft. The members of Confluence have known each other for nearly a decade, playing with each other in various musical incarnations over the years. After Ian’s previous band broke up in summer 2011, Alan, Spenser and Ian began messing around as a trio. While they wrote a few songs, they knew something was missing. By February of 2012, that something was found when Brett DeWire joined the group.
Their debut EP was recorded in December 2012, and the band made an appearance at the 2013 Boise Treefort Music Festival. Since January 2013, this Denver-based quartet has shared the stage with Maps and Atlases, Radiation City, Typhoon, AAN, And So I Watch You From Afar, The Tontons and This Town Needs Guns. They have also been working on recording new music.
Confluence recorded and mixed their new singles at Mammoth Cave Studios in Denver in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the way that time and life changes can affect a relationship, the first new single “Awaiting” describes a relationship teetering on the brink of failure. However, the song’s bridge makes allusions to the couple salvaging the relationship because they know it can still work.
According to Ian, “Our goal is to engage listeners by pairing strong grooves, solid hooks and technically minded song structures into individual little packages.”
The band’s new groove and riff-driven sound developed out of months of playing live and workshopping new material, and gives a glimpse at the entertaining variety of their live shows. Confluence will be touring throughout the summer and fall, but you can listen to their recent single “Awaiting” online now.
